What’s Christmas without Santa? or if you really get into the holiday spirit, without many Santas.

We like the cherry-nosed toy deliverer best in his red furry suit and sleigh. But we understand that sometimes other togs work better for him. And sometimes he ditches the sleigh for other modes of transit.

Here are six Santas we think are worth going out of your way for in a day trip, or even a holiday season weekend getaway. Even if they don’t make a believer out of you, they’ll give you a laugh.

In Mystic, CT Santa kicks off a day of festivities by coming up the Mystic River by Tugboat in mid-afternoon.

After pulling ashore he greets local children and listens to their Christmas lists.

Later in the evening there is a tree lighting and a lighted boat parade down the river with awards for  Most Charismatic Crew, Best Dressed Vessel and Most Holiday Spirit, among others.

When: In 2018 it’s the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Scuba Santa

Is Christmas better down where it’s wetter? In Kentucky, you’ll see!

In a watery wonderland at the 
Newport Aquarium in Newport, KY
 the man in red trades his fur for a wetsuit and SCUBA gear. He waves to young fans through the glass and checks his list for naughty jellyfish and nice anemone.

Elsewher in the aquarium, his elves chill with sting rays, sea horse lights twinkle and Santa opens a seasonal post office among the penguins.

When: In 2018 Santa swims from November 23 through December 31.

Subway Santa

Santa rides the L train iN Chicago in Decmber

Each year the Chicago Transit authority decks out select L trains as Holiday Trains with lights, decorations and Elves.

Santa leads the train along it’s route, picking up routine passengers and delivering baskets of food to community organizations.

When: The trains run on various routes between November 23 and December 21.

Surfin’ Santa

Surfin’ Santa dons board shorts and a Hawaiian shirt, and catches a wave into the Seaport Village in San Diego to poss for photos with kids and his giant surfboard (top).

When: In 2018 look for him to hang 10 on November 24.

Skiing Santas 

seven skiing santas..and a bunch snowboarding too, at Sunday RiverSunday River Ski Resort in Newry, Maine kicks off its ski and snowboard season each year with a create a snowy spectacle.

The resort offers $15 lift tickets to the first 250 guests who arrive in red suits and beards. The money goes to the resort’s charity foundation.

Be careful who you bump into as you shred down the mountain; you could wind up on the naughty list.

When: In 2018 the Santa Clones hit the slopes on December 2.

 Soaring Santa

When: In 2018 he’ll buzz by on the morning of December 1.
