How Is the Golden Arrow, Lake Placid With Kids?
The Hotel: Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort*
Where: Lake Placid, NY
The Golden Arrow has probably the best hotel location in Lake Placid. It’s on the lake and has a beach for swimming in summer and for outdoor fires, hockey and ice skating in winter. It’s it’s also right on Main Street and an easy walk to skating, the Olympic Center and lots of restaurants and shops. It connects by an indoor corridor to the Alpine Mall, which has a great Mexican spot.
The Golden Arrow is a busy family hotel, and in the winter, when we always visit, it often hosts large groups in town for hockey, ice skating or other competitions. These groups have never inconvenienced us. And with a big crowd around no one notices if our kid gets a little boisterous at breakfast or at the pool. The lobby has a big picture window with a lake view and an inviting fireplace. It’s the sort of lobby that invites lingering and hanging out with a board game in the evening.
We had a family room overlooking the lake when we were there and loved it. It had a second small bedroom for our daughter, a gas fireplace and a seating area, too. We could have dessert, read or play games by the fire at night and there was plenty of room for drying wet bathing suits and ski gear. It was roomy and cozy at the same time.
The Lakefront is the best amenity in summer and winter. The pool is good size and there is a sauna and whirlpool – these can get busy après ski but are a welcome treat.
There’s onsite parking, outside and underground. The latter can be a little tricky to access in winter. Rooms have refrigerators.
The restaurant, Generations, has typical ski-town food. The breakfast buffet is good for fueling up for skiing and skating. At night the desserts are really good. We stopped in after dinner elsewhere a few times to bring a couple of glasses of wine and a tiramisu or cheesecake back to the room.
The Bottom Line:
We don’t always get to stay at the Golden Arrow during our winter visits to Lake Placid because it books up, especially over the Christmas and winter breaks . But if you can get a room you’ll find a comfortable and friendly family hotel that is nicely located and a good value.
